Hoping it might bring some help to others trying to venture out | I will also include a long A to Z list of transcription companies | places you can apply to for Independent Contractor work ... full list coming soon, in the meantime, the A-C listings are below.

EXPRESS SCRIBE TRANSCRIPTION AUDIO PLAYER

I use Express Scribe (transcription audio player) software to play back audios. This software facilitates use of a foot pedal which increases productivity by miles and miles. The software is free and can be downloaded at: http://www.nch.com.au/in/ggscribe.html

Foot pedals and headsets are also available at this site. I use the VEC Infinity USB port pedal.
I also use, occasionally, other playback softwares including: InqScribe, For the Record Player, FTW. I find sometimes when I have a low or muffled audio, I use the alternate softwares to see which one comes to my rescue, since sometimes an audio might play a bit clearer on one software over another.

HOW TO AUTOMATE TIME CODES IN EXPRESS SCRIBE

I've found this tip very handy for transcripts that require regular time codes, where you can automate the time code in Express Scribe instead of having to type it manually. Am sure a number of you fellow transcribers already know this, but I'll still mention it here for what it's worth.

Setting the equals key for the Hotkey to copy time stamp to clipboard: Open Express Scribe --
(Control > Hot Keys setup > Add > Press = > Select Copy Time > OK > close option panel)

Thereafter (1) when you press = the timecode will be copied to your clipboard. Then (2) Paste (Ctrl V) the timecode will be pasted automatically in the Word Doc.
(NB: I think, setting the hotkey might be missing a step, in that after you > Select: Copy Time < you then select 'ADD') This process can be automated further, but I've never tried it, so that might be worth exploring for future; i.e. by recording a macro using Word. I have not personally done this, but I have the instructions for it, partially buried somewhere. I suppose using the macro method would be a one-step method, instead of the 2-step (copy / paste) process above. This works charm, and it's easy to set -- the only thing I've found is while you have Express Scribe open, the = symbol will show as 'blank' when pressed ... so for that symbol to be visible/active again you will first have to close Express Scribe. I suppose, any other hotkey could be used besides using the = key, but it might be the most convenient key and one you might not need when typing a Word document. Hopefully this might be helpful to someone out there. I had a long-term project once that required time stamping every 30 to 45 seconds, and it speeded up the TAT tremendously.NETWORK COMMUNITY
Network forum for endless resourses on how to get started, job leads to transcription companies who will hire, and so on, I recommend: http://transcriptionhaven.com/

ELANCE.COM
I established my 'virtual presence' via Elance.Com where I worked for a diverse list of clients; and since all transcription jobs via Elance are all feedback-critical, I established a verifiable feedback record from over 30 clients, which greatly enhanced my transcription resume.

FEEDBACK/HISTORY: http://www.elance.com/s/edit/aurora33/
Link to my poetry blogsite: www.deloresgauntlett.blogspot.com
LinkedIn: http://jm.linkedin.com/pub/delores-gauntlett/10/750/864
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/?tid=1643538603372&sk=messages#!/profile.php?id=1434177708

TRANSCRIPTION COMPANIES THAT HIRE (more to come)
1-2-1 Services - Can dedicate at least 20 hours per week, have at least 5 years of experience, own digital pedal and software, willing to learn other aspects of transcription work.
